If
you like Wood-Mode’s Southampton design theme, you’ll notice
the period is characterized by the emphasis which was placed
on Classical architectural detail.
Palladian style windows were commonly used as a focal point
in the home’s design, with their influence repeated in other
architectural elements such as doorways and built-in
cabinetry. Hardwood and stone flooring were predominantly
used in more or less elaboration, depending on the
importance of the room and the occupants it was designed
for. Ceilings, of the public rooms in particular, were often
adorned with elaborate plaster mouldings, again painted to
be in contrast to their background.
A study in the late Georgian style, the kitchen in this
photo has a restrained sophistication which is classic and
comfortable. Its stately appearance has been revisited many
times in the decades since and has come to be a touchstone
for country homes throughout the United States.
